TATANO VALERIA

Valeria Tatano (b. 1964) graduated in Architecture from Iuav University of Venice in 1989. She has been a licensed architect and a member of the Chamber of Architects, Planners, Landscapers, and Conservationists (Ordine degli Architetti P.P.C.) of the Province of Venice since 1991. She obtained her PhD in Architectural Technology in 1995. Subsequently, she served as a Researcher in Architectural Technology at Iuav from 1995 to 2002, and as an Associate Professor in the same field from 2002 to 2016.
She is currently a Full Professor of Technological and Environmental Design of Architecture** (National Academic Field SSD CEAR-08/C) at the Department of Architecture and Arts (Culture del Progetto) of the Iuav University of Venice.

Her research focuses particularly on the culture of technological innovation. Within this field, she participated in the PRIN 2004-2005 national research program with a project titled: *"Technical culture, technical information, and building production in architectural design."
From 2009 to 2011, she was the head of scientific research under a convention with BolognaFiere, focusing on product analysis and system innovations presented at the SAIE exhibition, where she also worked on the publication of the "New Products Catalogue.
In 2014, she served as the scientific coordinator for a research project on the energy performance of external fixtures. This research secured funding for a European Social Fund (ESF) research fellowship in partnership with Secco Sistemi SpA, titled: "New strategies for designing the installation of vertical external fixtures in walls to improve energy efficiency."
In 2016-2017, she was the scientific coordinator for a research agreement with Mazzonetto SpA for the study and design of a "metal cladding system for the building envelope," which led to a patent application (filing no. 102017000020762).
In 2020, she was the scientific coordinator for a research agreement funded by Veronafiere SpA aimed at designing an extracurricular university course on "Paths of innovation in the application of natural stone in architecture and industrial design."
In 2021, she was the scientific coordinator for a University research fellowship titled: "A new urban manufacturing: the case of carpentry in the restoration of Carlo Scarpa's works."
In 2008, she held a PhD course at the Iuav University of Venice on Health and Safety in the Workplace, funded by INAIL from 2008 to 2010.
In 2016, she was the scientific coordinator for a research fellowship funded by the Department of Architecture and Arts on inclusive accessibility in Venice. In 2017, she served as the scientific coordinator for the ESF-funded research project "Study of innovative devices to ensure accessibility for people with motor disabilities on gentle slopes."
Since 2025, she has been the Coordinator of IDEA (Design and Environmental Accessibility), a university research unit.
She is currently the co-scientific coordinator of:
-The RIR (Regional Innovative Network) project "Hybrid Sustainable World"(ACTION 1.1.4 "Support for collaborative R&D activities for the development of new sustainable technologies, new products, and services");
-The RIR project "SMARTIE: Multisensory Solutions for Accessibility and Inclusive Technological Resilience" (SMARTIE - Smart Modular Accessible Real-Time Inclusive Environments*, POR-FESR simplified research framework).
She is also the scientific coordinator for the funded research contract between Iuav University of Venice and ADR Ingegneria SpA for the drafting of Guidelines for the inclusive design of airport structures.

Teaching Activities
She carries out intensive teaching activities in Architectural Technology courses for both Bachelor's and Master's degree programs. Since 2018, she has been teaching"Building Restoration Technologies and Inclusive Design of Existing Structures" at the Iuav Postgraduate School in Architectural and Landscape Heritage (SSIBAP). The course focuses heavily on inclusive design within historic landscapes. Since the 2020/2021 academic year, she has been a member of the faculty board of the Iuav University PhD School's program in "Architecture, City and Design."

Institutional Roles
She has held several institutional positions. Notably, she served as the Rector's Delegate for Buildings and Real Estate Assets from 2015 to 2021.
She currently serves as the Rector's Delegate for policies and actions relating to inclusion, disability, and sustainability. In this capacity, she is a member of the CNUDD (National University Conference of Delegates for Disability) and a member of the "Inclusion and Social Justice" Working Group of the RUS (Italian Network of Universities for Sustainable Development). She is also a member of SITdA (Italian Society of Architectural Technology), participating in its "Environmental Accessibility" cluster.
