Agenda
Description
Born in 1976, he attended the Politecnico di Milano, specializing in typeface design and information design. Since 1998, he has embarked on a professional journey that has led him to undertake significant projects on an international level. His contribution to typeface design is indisputable, having designed typefaces for The Observer, Corriere della Sera, Il Sole 24 Ore, and the Democratic Party, among others. Notably, the Titillium typeface project, which he led, has become the official typeface for the websites of the Italian Public Administration.
He has combined research activities with his professional practice, contributing to the definition of themes and concepts such as synsemia, studying the reading process, and publishing articles in leading journals. He has been a member of the editorial boards of Progetto Grafico, Graphicus, and the Scritture series.
Since 2004, he has been involved in design education at various institutions, including the Politecnico di Bari and the Accademia di Belle Arti di Urbino. From 2007 to 2018, he has been tenured lecturer of History of the Book at ISIA Urbino, where he coordinated numerous research projects. From 2013 to 2016, he was the Director of the same institute, in addition to serving on the Academic Board, the Board of Administration, and as the Erasmus program coordinator.
He has been part of the board of IIDD (now Design for All Italia), a member of the Board of Probi Viri, the Board of Auditors, and the Executive Board of AIAP. He is a coordinator at the technical table for the definition of the UNI technical standard for the professional figure of the designer.
Since 2018, he has been an associate professor at the Università Iuav di Venezia, where he is deputy director of the User Lab, a laboratory dedicated to empirical experimental activities. Since 2022, he has been a member of the PhD Board in Humanities at the University of Urbino Carlo Bo. He is Research Fellow at Hasselt Universiteit since 2023.

Overview (6)
Empirical Research and User Testing on Editorial Products and Brand Identity
Description: User testing of editorial products, particularly print (development of investigation methodologies, experimental design, test administration). Studies on the modes of electronic consumption of literary and educational texts. Empirical experimentation on brand perception. Development of a quantitative investigation methodology using a Discrete Choice Model (DCM) through the use of synsemic texts.
Empirical Research on Territorial Perception
Description: Methods of qualitative and quantitative investigation on the perception of territory, with a particular focus on the cartographic and geographic skills of space users. This line of research has subsequently focused on studying the perceptual distortions involved in qualitative analysis methods.
History of Digital Typography
Description: Historical and critical analysis of the evolution of digital typography and contemporary practices, with a particular focus on parametric systems and commercial and copyright issues. This includes studying the precursors of modular and parametric systems, such as modular typefaces, pantographs, measurement systems, and more.
Parametric Typography
Description: Definition of the taxonomy of typographic variables aimed at developing algorithms for the automatic generation of typographic variants.
Reading process
Description: Measurement of reading performance, with a particular focus on dyslexia, aiming to optimize the aspects related to typeface design and page typography for the reader, both in print and electronic formats. Specifically, the work is aimed at identifying, isolating, and reproducing the typographic variables involved in the reading process.
Synsemia
Description: Study of the non-linear component of writing (sinsemia), aimed at the production of synoptic graphic artifacts (infographics), educational purposes, and habilitation practices. From a historical perspective, this includes a particular focus on Mesoamerican writing systems and synoptic artifacts from the 11th to the 17th century, with special attention to the concept of analogy.
Following this, the study extends to the use of sinsemic artifacts for educational purposes, especially regarding electronic usage and educational inclusion.
