Sound studies represent an interdisciplinary field of study that aims to delve not only into the production and consumption of music, but also into sounds, "noises," and, more broadly, audible elements of everyday life. It explores how society perceives them as well as their transformation over time. Despite experiencing significant growth in the international context, sound studies struggle to establish their own research autonomy in the Italian academic debate, and consequently, they have difficulty making a significant contribution, especially in disciplines focused on design, urban planning, and the arts.
The research center intercepts the main approaches developed within sound studies, establishing connections between complementary academic fields and cultivating an interest in sound from an interdisciplinary perspective that aligns with the Sciences of Design and Representation, Urban Studies, and Visual and Performing Arts. The research center originates from the unique but not coincidental concentration of scholars and designers working in these areas within Iuav. It is driven by the promoters' desire to collaborate and create a reference point within the university and the Italian context. Additionally, it aims to actively contribute to the activities of the "Italian Forum of Sound Studies," a recently established inter-university organization of which the Iuav University of Venice is a member.
The interdisciplinary nature of the scholars' profiles involved and their research suggests the possibility of relating diverse and integrable skills to: (i) define and propose inter-university research, dissemination, and training paths; (ii) participate in national and international funding calls; (iii) meet the growing educational demand in the field of sonic culture; (iv) address specific market-related requests more effectively.
