SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH
Direction or participation in the activities of a research group characterized by collaborations at national or international level
2024-2025 Co-scientific manager of the Research Project “ACP 21 - Arts and Cultural Populism in the 21st Century. Contradictory and Conflictual Aesthetics in Visual Arts Exhibitions”, funded by the Department of Project Cultures with resolution no. 17 Research Programming and Evaluation of 10 April 2024. In collaboration with: Caterina Caputo, Francesca Castellani), Jacopo Galimberti, Angela Vettese. The project aims to develop an innovative research proposal aimed at participating in a Horizon call (WP 2025-27, Cluster 2, Destination 1: Innovative Research on Democracy and Governance), adhering to the invitation of the MACMEED consortium. The aim of the project eligible for Horizon is to document, analyse and provide interpretative keys on the interaction between artistic processes and cultural populism through exhibition systems in the area of EU influence, with a specific focus on some crisis faults. The field of investigation is defined in the circuit of transnational events such as the Venice Biennale, Documenta and Manifesta, organised with a political approach (funding, pavilions, selection of artists, etc.) and capable of intercepting a large and non-specialised audience. It is planned to consolidate the theoretical and operational basis of the research intended to flow into the Horizon Proposal, verifying its field, tools and method, and to support its drafting with 1-2 contracts to researchers with expertise in the subject and in writing calls for proposals and a Visiting Researcher.
2024-2025 Scientific Director of the Research Project “Institutionalization as a Creative Process” funded by the Department of Project Cultures with the Decrees of the Department Directors 21/2024-11/4-2024. The project includes a publication and a conference on the topic. If by politics we mean an initiative that aims at the institution of society-by-society itself, we must accept that such activity makes sense only in the context of the questions: what is society? How was it established? What is the purpose of this institution? For a long time, the answer to these questions was unable to avoid referring to a transcendent elsewhere: explaining the existence of social organizations starting from a mythical origin or a supernatural reason. Considering the values of individual and collective life as undisputed and indisputable: leading every reflection on the institution of society and its meaning back to an extra-social otherness. Modern people have taken it upon themselves to consider that laws and ordinances are not dictated to them by the gods, nor by fate, nor by nature; but designed and elaborated by themselves, in total autonomy. Considering themselves the architects of their own society, judging themselves responsible for their own history and destiny, they have therefore given a peculiar form to social life: they have understood it as the practice of discussing, criticizing and, where necessary, correcting, pre-existing legislation and established norms. In this way, they have emancipated themselves from the belief in the supersensible, as well as from the related obligation to submit to its imponderable and incontrovertible truths. This way of seeing things has started the process of secularization. Modernity is in fact the time of the fracture with the order of the supernatural: the moment in which, having become aware of being the authors and the only ones responsible for the rules they have autonomously given themselves, citizens are in some way forced to engage in politics.
2023-2024 Scientific co-responsible for the Research Project “Staging Exhibit Display: the Age of Sustainability (second cycle)” funded by the Department of Project Culture with resolution dCP/2023 ARSBD/ research programming and evaluation of 10 May 2023. In collaboration with: Francesca Castellani, Roberta Albiero, Fiorella Bulegato, Antonella Gallo, Alessandra Vaccari, Angela Giovanna Vettese, Department of Project Cultures, Iuav University of Venice. The project intends to complete the Staging Exhibit Display program (call 2021, € 2,400), capitalizing on the scientific results with a publication in English, peer reviewed and open access that proposes itself in an innovative and authoritative way on the international studies scene. The aim is to conduct an integrated investigation of the system of spatial, physical, symbolic and social relations involved in the display through an interdisciplinary perspective, aimed at identifying innovative axes of research and building a national and international reference network aimed at future participation in calls for proposals. The first project took place in five meetings (October-December 2022) with authoritative specialists, each focused on a methodological question. The survey will be fueled with new disciplinary questions - guaranteed by the transversality of the current group - through a study day (or a second cycle of meetings) and the publication of a volume structured around the methodological nodes that represented the backbone of the research, collecting the interventions of the speakers and proponents. The results of this research program were presented at the international conferences 1. “Public art and participation: between monument and social project”, with the participation of Roberto Pinto and Clarissa Ricci, University of Bologna, Francesca Castellani, Iuav University of Venice, 24/11/2023, Auditorium Santa Marta, Iuav University of Venice; 2. “Immersed in the image: aesthetic experience of the VR work” with the participation of Fabrizia Bandi, State University of Milan, Mario Farina, Iuav University of Venice, 28/11/2023, Auditorium Santa Marta, Iuav University of Venice; 3. “Du musée panoptique savant au musée comme matrice patrimoniale”, with the participation of Paul Rasse, Université de Nice Sophia-Antipolis; Francesca Castellani, Iuav University of Venice, March 8, 2024, Auditorium Santa Marta, Iuav University of Venice; 4. “Restoring fashion at Pitti. The museum, the restoration and the curatorial project”, with the participation of Vanessa Gavioli, University of Florence; Alessandra Vaccari, Iuav University of Venice, March 12, 2024, Auditorium Santa Marta, Iuav University of Venice. These meetings gave rise to the publication of the collective volume in English Castellani F., Glicenstein J., Zanella F. (edited by), Questioning Exhibit Display. Theories, Forms, Perspectives. Paris, Hermann. This volume contains the article Restoring Art to the Present. The Museum as a space full of events and conviviality.
2023-2024 Scientific Director of the Research Project “Sociology of Culture” which includes a publication and a conference on the topic. It is essential to underline the normative links between culture and democracy. These two notions have in common the recognition of the heterogeneity of society, of the intelligence of the public user, of the relevance of negotiation. Especially at a time when the world has never been so invaded by voices and information without being able to communicate better, or to better respect differences. And, at the same time, recognize the growing importance of cultural diversity. If the world is a very small "technical village", its socio-symbolic reality, on the contrary, forces us to take into account the inexhaustible diversity that continues to grow as exchanges progress. Individuals and peoples never express themselves in the same way. Mutual distrust becomes a central challenge in a world where apparently everyone knows everything and sees everything. The more technical communication simplifies and improves exchanges, the more human communication encounters the more complex realities of cultural diversity. If information can be technical, communication is always human and historical. Culture, in fact, is political, in the sense that it most often constitutes a negotiation process aimed at building a more or less peaceful coexistence between economic, legal and social differences. The results of this research program were the study meetings with Dominique Wolton (CNRS, Paris, France), Benoit Le Blanc, Institut Polytechnique of Bordeaux, France; Margherita D’Andrea and Luigi Sica, (University of Studies “Federico II” of Naples); Davide Borrelli, Sergio Marotta, Stefania Ferraro, Arturo Lando, Antonio Zapelli and Luciano Petullà (University of Studies “Suor Orsola Benincasa” of Naples). These meetings gave rise to the publication of the collective volume “Sociology of culture”. Wolton D., Borrelli D., Grassi C. (edited by), Naples, Editoriale Scientifica, 2023. ISBN 979-12-5976-634-2. In this volume he published the articles: 1. The social sciences put to the test by vital worlds as a political object, pp. 43-61; 2. Culture as a social practice, pp. 89-106; 3. From mass cultural industries to demassified creative industries, pp. 155-164; 4. The social sciences and the transformation of society (in collaboration with Wolton D., Borrelli D.), pp. 9-13.
