Abstract:
The Island is an horizon, is a bank in Terraferma (Italia 2011). The setting of the film Terraferma by Emanuele Crialese is an island floating in a beautiful, thus even more scary, sea – Linosa stands for Lampedusa, where almost daily several actual immigrants try to land in Italy from the southern coasts of the Mediterranean Sea. Director of the film hires for his cast Mimmo Cuticchio, a master of puppets' theatre, and Timnit T., a woman shipwrecked in Lampedusa in 2009: with this peculiar cast he tells us the story of the unwritten laws of the sea clashing with the positive laws of todays Italian government. Crialese succeeds in outlining a picture of the crisscrossed fates of the islanders and of the asylum seekers in search of their fortune, on the trail of their various desires.
