Chapter
Publication Date:
2017
abstract:
Since the turn of the twenty-first century, interest in the design of new elements geared towards preserving and reusing ancient buildings has been increasing, both in scientific publishing and in Department of Architecture syllabuses.
Many improvement programmes see ‘additions’ (or the ‘filling of lacunae’) not only as an answer to conservation needs, but as a design opportunity where new extensions become an instrument of today’s new architectural syntax as well. The use of building materials such as steel permits the development
of extensions that are added on to historic buildings like new stratigraphic layers, freeing us from the formal and syntactic constraints of the past.
The need to relate project experiences to conservational aims led the study to focus its analysis on well-known improvement programmes carried out since the beginning of this century on abandoned historic buildings. The paper highlights how the improvements apparently possess clear formal similarities,
mainly because of the methods used to communicate their contents by architectural journals.
In contrast, this study considers the outcomes of improvement programmes in terms of the innate consistency of the design choices made, with particular attention paid to defining the construction details, allowing us to underline significant mutual differences in the conservation of built heritage.
