Typographic Promotion as a Cross-Cultural Mediation Channel: Reading Type Specimens through the Case of the Nebiolo Type Foundry

Capitolo di libro
Data di Pubblicazione:
2026
Abstract:
This paper examines type specimens – promotional artefacts produced by type foundries – made between the 1950s and 1970s as privileged sites for analysing the mediation of typography across the production, distribution, and consumption of these artefacts. Moving beyond object-centred design history, the paper investigates how specimens functioned as hybrid devices: commercial ephemera, technical guides, and pedagogical tools. The case study focuses on the Italian Nebiolo Type Foundry and draws on a corpus of promotional materials compiled in a digital database from Italian and international archival collections. By combining quantitative observations from the database with a close reading of three exemplary specimens – Estro, Recta, and Metropol – the paper proposes an analytical framework for examining type specimens as relational artefacts. Methodologically, the article argues for the historiographical value of such materials, showing how these artefacts – long marginal to canonical narratives and only recently subject to systematic archival preservation – constitute essential evidence for writing design history beyond the national frame.
