Abstract:
This book follows two trajectories. The first addresses a theoretical question: how can we design in the Fourth Machine Age while embracing the paradigm of sustainability? The second trajectory stems from a practical question: how can we design a contemporary glass factory within the historic context of an old glass factory in Murano? These two trajectories intersect, generating additional tensions and connections.
Thinking about the Architecture of the Fourth Machine Age means reflecting on architecture within the context of our time, its preceding narratives and the stories yet to unfold. The complexity and contradictions of data, information, space-time coordinates, and rapid environmental changes will not necessarily result in formally articulated architectures but will demand conscious and sentient spaces, that need to be imagined now.
