Case studies of eXtended reality combined with Building Information Modeling: A literature review

Academic Article
Publication Date:
2024
abstract:
Extended Reality (XR) and Building Information Modeling (BIM) are two promising technologies that have the potential to revolutionize the architecture, engineering, and construction (AEC) industry. XR refers to the collective term for immersive technologies such as virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR), and mixed reality (MR), while BIM is a digital tool that provides a detailed and comprehensive model of a building or infrastructure project. This review article presents an overview of the current state of research on integrating and implementing XR and BIM technologies in real project scenarios, highlighting the benefits of their use in various stages of the AEC industry. The literature review reveals that integrating these technologies can enhance collaboration, visualization, decision-making, and stakeholder communication. However, challenges such as technical limitations, lack of standardization, and high costs hinder their widespread adoption. Overall, the review suggests that integrating XR and BIM technologies can potentially improve the quality and efficiency of the AEC industry, but further research is needed to address the challenges and fully exploit their benefits.
