Through the metaphor of the journey in Italy, the essay intends to investigate the relationship between the Italian municipalities involved in W.A.Ve. 2018 and the reference railway stations. “Italian Beauty” has lauched a
discussion on small and medium sized municipalities that involved large, small and medium stations, served by different levels of speed and frequency; the initiative represents a first, and perhaps unique, joint survey between Università Iuav di Venezia and Rete Ferroviaria Italiana spread throughout the Italian territory
on the railway stations and some related lines. The results have been a lucid investigation and an interesting collection of project proposals for the whole country.
Modernize the train stations, with a cross-border and holistic approach, because of the peculiar capillarity
of the Italian railway system, can be a good opportunity to explore possible strategies for the restoration of
the country. In fact, Italy is a fragile territory that would require the rehabilitation and safeguard not only of its
historical monuments and well-known villages, but also of mobility infrastructures, allowing the achievement
and enhancement of the less known centers, the “small Italies” that are also part of that composite system that
is the Bel Paese.
