Visual Semiotics

(English below) L'articolo è parte di un volume collettivo in lingua inglese dedicato alle differenti tradizioni e prospettive del vasto campo degli Image Studies, dove introduce la "Visual Semiotics". Il testo ripercorre le fasi principali dello sviluppo storico di una semiotica dell'immagine, soffermandosi sulle questioni teoriche affrontate e chiarite nelle sue varie fasi: la differenza rispetto ai modelli linguistici della produzione di senso, la questione del 'linguaggio' delle immagini e delle sue condizioni, il superamento dell'idea di 'unità minime' all'opera nei testi visivi versala concezione dell'immagine come 'sistema locale'. The article is part of a handbook of image studies where it sketches a profile of visual semiotics. It traces the history of the Semiotic research on images with special reference to the analysis of the visual text as conceived by A. Greimas and his school. The article is part of a collective volume in English devoted to the different traditions and perspectives of the vast field of Image Studies, and it introduces “Visual Semiotics.” The text traces the main stages of the historical development of a semiotics of the image, dwelling on the theoretical issues addressed and elucidated in its various phases: the difference from the linguistic models of sense production, the question of a 'language' of images and its conditions, the overcoming of the idea of 'minimal unities' at work in visual texts versala conception of the image as a 'local system'. The text dwells in particular on the two modes of sense generation at work in visual texts according to Greimas and offers, finally, an example of analysis that clarifies how plastic and figurative semiotics cooperate in the work of art and, by so doing, are capable of producing meanings that touch particularly dense historical-political horizons.
