Montage in Contemporary Art. A New Technical Tradition Prompting a Non-Teleological Philosophy of History

Chapter
Publication Date:
2018
abstract:
By way of introduction to a book which was born from an international conference at Palazzo Grassi, Venice, in December 2014, the introduction to various essays aims to create an art histirocal but also a philosophical frame to the use of montage in contemporary arts. it looks as a practice which can be recognized as an anthropological basis, as something that also has its root in the way the brain associates and glues fragments, but also as something that became more and more relevant with the emerging lack of teleology in the way History is interpreted. Montage-based art practices reflect the increasing success of a way to see the real as something that happens, that has at its core more a casual progression than a specific research for safety or knowledge or the actualization of an Absolute Spirit.
