The history of cities and Historical Geographic Information System (HGIS)

Chapter
Publication Date:
2018
abstract:
Research in humanities can benefit from the use of digital sources and tools. On the one hand, scholars can utilize the increasing number of digital reproductions of original sources from archives, which means that documents with optimal definition are readily available for consultation. On the other hand, the adoption of technologies for the study, analysis, and visualization of research material has become of fundamental importance in the study of buildings and cities. The use of digital tools requires a wide-ranging skill set, and for this reason, historians often need to collaborate with experts from other fields, transforming what has traditionally been individual research into an interdisciplinary activity. This has very much been the case with Visualizing Venice (VV).
