GIROTONDO O GIROTIPO: TIPO È/E CONOSCENZA, TRA DEFINIZIONI, RIFLESSIONI E POLEMICHE

abstract:
«Every rule is but a means», observes Caillois, suggesting a way to reconsider architectural type: not as a model for replication, but as a dynamic principle that guides without imposing. Through a deliberately selective (and partisan) reading of texts - beginning with Quatremère de Quincy - and through compositional experiments (where even conflict becomes generative), this essay identifies and explores three critical approaches to type: The historical-cultural perspective (Muratori, Rossi, Brandi), which understands type as emerging from and reflecting its cultural context; The theoretical perspective (Rebecchini, Ungers, Bohigas), through new interdisciplinary liaison; The philological perspective (Caniggia, König, Portoghesi), which examines its morphogenetic logic. The essay reveals persistent tensions: between empiricism and abstraction (DEAU), between standardization and freedom (Quaroni), between history and innovation (Gregotti). Yet type endures as what Rossi called an "antidote to arbitrariness," bridging intuition and design. Its essential vagueness - «everything in type is more or less vague» (Quatremère, 1832) - becomes its strength: a framework that, like a spiral (girotipo), reinterprets the past for the future.
«Imagination is the most scientific of faculties», wrote Baudelaire in 1856. Today, as architecture risks fragmentation, typology invites us to recognize what Martí Arís termed «structural similarities beyond apparent differences. For as Bohigas cautioned, typology should not be reduced to a catalogue, but understood as a "meeting point" between knowledge and invention.
