The Role of Transport in Urban Regeneration. The Neighborhood Le Albere in Trento Through the Lens of GBC Quartieri

Conference Paper
Publication Date:
2024
abstract:
In the context of sustainability on an urban scale, international protocols can help both in the planning phase and in maintenance over time. Within these, mobility has a particularly important role in minimizing the negative effects on the environment of the new districts and the contrast of the dispersion of the settlements. In fact, the so-called urban sprawl can cause, among other things, increase in the use of the car to access basic services. For a sustainable design, it is therefore necessary to consider the connections of new neighborhoods, parking surfaces, access to public transport, elimination of the heat island, and the use of renewable sources, with the aim of reducing the effects of disorderly growth and creating livable communities through compact neighborhoods that encourage walking and cycling.
Features associated with sidewalks, pathways, plantings, tree-lined avenues, minimal parking areas, measures in place to slow down cars, and community involvement in design, along with higher land-use density, promote sustainability and the livability of the site.
From the analysis of the GBC Quartieri energy and environmental sustainability protocol on an urban scale, it was possible to note how almost half of the internal credits and prerequisites involve mobility: from the intelligent location of the new district to cycle mobility, from interchange points to shaded streets. These characteristics were further evaluated in the experience of Trento Le Albere.
