Il carattere Balilla un ponte fra Italia e Germania

Durante il ventennio fascista, tra le forme di propaganda del Regime, si distinguono gli artefatti grafici dell’Opera Nazionale Balilla (Onb), organizzazione parastatale dedicata a educare la gioventù, costituita nel 1926 e presieduta da Renato Ricci. L’Onb, sino al 1932, mette a punto la sua identità visiva servendosi di linguaggi eterogenei. Da quell'anno di svolta, il carattere tipografico Balilla diviene identitario dell’ente, rappresentando il linguaggio razionalista che caratterizza lo scenario della grafica in quel periodo storico. In questo articolo, mettiamo in luce le similitudini tra il carattere tipografico Balilla e il lettering realizzato da Herbert Bayer per la rivista “die neue linie”, ricostruendo i legami tra l’ente Onb e la grafica tedesca dello stesso periodo.-----During the era of the Fascist Regime in Italy, the Opera Nazionale Balilla (Onb), a parastatal organisation established in 1926 to educate Italian pupils, stood out with its distinctive graphic artefacts amongst the regime's forms of propaganda. Until 1932, the Onb developed a visual identity
utilising heterogeneous languages. From that pivotal year, the institution adopted the Balilla typeface as its identity, which embodies the rationalist language that characterises the graphic design of that historical period. In this article, we analyse the similarities between the Balilla typeface and the lettering designed by Herbert Bayer for the magazine “die neue linie”, and we explore the connections between the Onb and the German graphics from the same period.
