La memoria dell’uso: da convitato di pietra a fattore strategico del Progetto = The recollection of the use: from a stone guest to a strategical factor of the project

Since Camillo Boito’s «Preservation or Restoration?» issue, a sort of dialectics has been characterising the Italian debate, till more recent approaches which often focus on the concept of updating-modernising. This term opens to contemporary culture topics and present functional needs.
Besides speculative drifts, interventions lead in the name of modernisation are usually based on free creativity and the recollection of the previous use is often neglected. The regeneration looks as much as efficient as the new function transcends the preceding one, regardless of any evaluation of compatibility.
The paper investigates the results of a different declension of the term updating-modernisation through a critical reading of some interventions whereby the memory of the previous use has bacome a strategical factor of the project and also a catalyst of value for the building and the place itself.
