REsiliency of BUILDings against strong wind events

Progetto
The current research project aims to the following results: - increase the awareness of designers, builders, building managers, building owners and authorities on the importance of a careful design of building envelopes to resist the increasing wind speed being recorded in Italy, as a consequence of climate change; create a categorization of the failure modes of the various elements of the building envelope, connected with the intensity of the winds recorded; - improve the specifications of the various parts of the building envelope to strengthen the resistance of new and refurbished buildings against winds both during their normal life but also considering construction and renovation operations when their strength characteristics do not meet the final design performance; - enhance the safety of pedestrians and nearby properties and decrease risk of injuries to pedestrians and damages to nearby properties thanks to a better design, construction and maintenance of building envelopes and of its accessories; Ministero dell'Università e della Ricerca MUR - BANDO 2022 detection and description of the flying debris phenomenon for the sake of additional future research activities. The conclusion of the research consists in the creation of a detailed map of the risk for the home cities of the three research units involved in the project (Milan, Venice and Matera) resulting in a direct involvement of the authorities responsible for the planning and maintenance of the built environment. This research proposal is connected with the Sustainable Development Goals (UN 2015) number 13 ‘Take urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts’ and number 11 ‘Make cities and human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable’ and meets EU’s Green Deal goal on Climate-proofing buildings (European Commission 2019)
