The research proposal starts from the availability of a database related to interventions of energy efficiency of Italian schools to
answer the following questions: Have they made effective and efficient improvements in energy consumption and building quality?
Has the real use and management of the buildings by the users been virtuous, indifferent or negative for the efficiency of the
buildings? How to raise awareness of environmentally conscious behavior in the use of the school buildings they inhabit?
The research aims to answer these questions by studying some representative cases of retrofit interventions; verifying the
correspondence between expected and estimated consumption; intervening on the unplanned consumption acting on the
involvement of users with social engagement tools and simulations supported by virtual digital models. In order to achieve its
targets, three thematic areas are involved, related to analytical and heuristic knowledge, integrated in an interdisciplinary and
collaborative approach: technological design, environmental technical physics and design for social innovation.
Two integrated and distinct methodological phases are defined: a 'data-driven' phase for the critical interpretation of sensitive data
related to the design and operational energy consumption of appropriately selected school buildings and their integration within new
BIM driven digital models; a 'design driven' phase for the subsequent creation of user-friendly interfaces for the management and
the conscious use by the users of the buildings.
