Abstract:
The vast literature on Alexander the Great and the fortune of his myth from Antiquity to modern times has recently been enriched by a miscellaneous volume edited by Alessandra Coppola and Franco Biasutti, entitled Alessandro Magno in età moderna (Cleup, Padova, 2009). The volume contains 17 contributions of high scientific level by Italian and foreign scholars, who face the rediscovery of the Macedonian king between the Humanism and the 19th century, dealing with philosophical, historiographic-literary, musical, theatrical and iconographic issues. In order to better explain the persistent appealing of the Macedonian in post-classical age as an exemplum of Virtue, Value, Wisdom and Good governance, a voluminous work of Paolo Moreno is presented as an Appendix. Through the reading of artworks and ancient Greek and Roman literary sources, Moreno gives the reader an effective framework which helps to contextualise the enormous artistic production on the glory of Alexander not only throughout his life, but also after his death.
