Venzone, il “Borgo più bello d’Italia” ricostruito dalle macerie = Venzone, the “Most Beautiful Italian Village”, Rebuilt from the Ruins

Il 1976 è l’anno della ferita per il Friuli. Un terremoto di vaste dimensioni sconquassa in due tempi le terre del nord-est dell’Italia portando distruzione nelle province di Udine e Pordenone, già fortemente provate da fenomeni di emigrazione e abbandono dei piccoli centri. Venzone è tra i paesi dell’epicentro, lungo la valle del fiume Tagliamento. Si tratta di un piccolo borgo costruito entro una doppia cinta fortificata medievale e connotato dalla presenza del duomo che domina il paesaggio.

A settembre, dopo la seconda scossa, è solo un cumulo di macerie, eppure nel 2017 gli è stato riconosciuto il titolo di “Borgo più bello d’Italia”. Sembra un paradosso, un paese che non c’è più, distrutto dalle violente scosse del 6 maggio e del 15 settembre del 1976, che viene insignito di un titolo, seppure popolare, che riconosce un valore aggiunto nel suo patrimonio architettonico e nella capacità di valorizzarlo e promuoverlo.

The year 1976 was the year in which Friuli was wounded. A massive earthquake smashed the Italian North-East twice, bringing destruction in the territories around Udine and Pordenone, already tried strongly by emigration and the abandonment of their small towns. Venzone was one of the villages near the epicentre, along the Tagliamento river valley. It was a small village built within a medieval fortified wall, characterised by a stately cathedral that dominated the landscape. After the second shock, Venzone became just a pile of rubble, and yet, in 2017, it was awarded the title of “Most beautiful Italian village”. It seems paradoxical that a village that was no longer there, destroyed by the violent shocks on 6th May and 15th September 1976, could be awarded a title ‒ albeit a popular one ‒ that acknowledges the added value of its architectural heritage and the ability to enhance and promote it.
