Abstract:
In this essay are considered some of the major urban implications produced by a strategic sector widely regarded as one of the most important driving force in Milan: the service sector activities 'creative' (in particular, fashion and industrial design).
We have identified and studied three cases:
1. a case of private initiative: the concentration of the processes of re-use of abandoned industrial buildings in the area behind the railway station of Porta Genova, used as containers of services 'creative' (area Savona / Tortona);
2. a case of public initiative, the restructuring of the former ‘Fabbrica del Vapore’ as an incubator for businesses and services and 'creative' activities;
3. a case of public-private partnerships: the construction of the City of Fashion Garibaldi-Repubblica area.
The thesis is that these cases identify the particular and distinct ways of interaction between local actors and - in the absence of an explicit and non-contradictory public policy in support of creative activities - taken together, provide some useful information to outline a distinct mode of local governance, characterized by a strong entrepreneurial orientation and more interested in investment and economic development through the construction of speculative places, that the strengthening of creative activities.
